A Korean paper traced 165 tonnes of books bought for Anthropic's AI.

The JoongAng Ilbo reported this weekend that shipping records show seven loads from Korea's largest book wholesaler since March 2025. It estimates about 414,000 books, and court papers show Anthropic also sought books from Japan and Taiwan. Korean publishers are now collecting signatures demanding that AI firms disclose and pay for the books they use.

Why it mattersA US judge ruled that scanning purchased books for training was fair use, unlike Anthropic's earlier pirated downloads. That is why publishers in Korea and Germany now push for laws requiring disclosure and licences.
