Nine days left: Google's Africa AI Lab gives founders early access to unreleased Gemini and Veo models, and possible funding

Applications for the Google Africa Applied AI Lab close on 31 August 2026, having opened on 1 July. It is aimed at full-time founders and at researchers who want to become founders, from pre-seed through Series C and beyond, working on problems specific to the continent across five areas: the future of work, knowledge, software development, creativity and entertainment. What successful applicants get is unusual and concrete. The programme offers early access to Google DeepMind models — Gemini, Gemma and Veo are named — before general release, so teams can test commercial uses ahead of the market. It also provides hands-on technical mentorship and go-to-market support from Google Research, and selected teams may be eligible for funding from the Google AI Futures Fund and from partner venture firms 4DX Ventures, Norrsken22, Novastar Ventures and Ventures Platform. Selections are notified from September. The co-development period runs from mid-September to early December and ends with a product demo day at the Accra AI Community Centre in Ghana. Applications go through the official Google Labs page.

Why it mattersEarly access to a model before it ships is the kind of advantage that is normally handed out through relationships rather than an application form, which is what makes an open call worth flagging. The deadline is the practical point: nine days from today, and the co-development period starts three weeks after that, so this is a decision to make this week rather than to file away. It is also worth being clear-eyed about the trade. Google gets a cohort of African teams stress-testing unreleased models on real problems, and the teams get compute, models and a possible cheque. That is a fair deal for a founder with a product to build — as long as they are choosing it with their eyes open.
