Rust's rule for AI: it may read, review and suggest — it may not write
Five Rust teams on Wednesday adopted an LLM policy for rust-lang/rust, the language's main repository, after a debate spanning more than 3,000 forum messages. AI may answer questions, analyze, check and review code, but LLM-written code, comments and docs are barred except for pre-arranged, well-tested changes — and any LLM involvement must be disclosed, never hidden. Maintainers cite a wave of low-effort AI pull requests hitting a queue already 1,281 PRs deep.
Why it mattersOne of the world's most important open-source projects just drew the sharpest line yet between AI as assistant and AI as author: 'analyze, distill, refine, check, suggest, review — but not create.' Expect other major projects to copy the formula, right as coding agents get good enough to want in.
