Jane Street tested the chip, took delivery of a rack, then led the $700 million round at a $21 billion valuation

Etched said on 18 August that it had raised $700 million at a $21 billion valuation, in a round led by the quantitative trading firm Jane Street. The order of events is the unusual part: Jane Street tested the hardware, took delivery of Etched's first customer rack into its own data centre, and then led the financing. The price is roughly double the $10.3 billion the company was worth in July, when it raised $300 million, and four times the $5 billion of December 2025. Etched sells complete inference clusters rather than loose chips — a prefill processor run at low voltage to chew through the input side of a request faster, paired with a cluster-scale memory system that lets many chips share memory quickly. Co-founder Robert Wachen frames the design around a split: 'inference is built in two stages, prefill and decode.' The company says it has booked more than $1 billion in orders and has begun shipping. Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Peter Thiel, Tiger Global, Bain Capital Ventures and Blackstone joined the round.

Why it mattersEtched has spent four years carrying a reputation problem: that it burns one model architecture into silicon and becomes worthless the moment the architecture moves on. A customer running the hardware in production and then writing the largest cheque is the most direct answer available to that objection. It also sets up the sharpest contrast of the week in AI hardware. Groq, which set out to beat Nvidia at inference and ended up licensing its technology and losing its founder to Nvidia, raised on 17 August at $3.5 billion — half its 2025 price. Etched doubled in a month. Investors have stopped paying for the promise of an Nvidia alternative; they are paying for racks somebody has already plugged in.
