Anthropic's quarterly revenue went from $787 million to more than $11.5 billion in a year — and it says it finally made an operating profit

Preliminary figures reported on 15 August put Anthropic's revenue for the second quarter above $11.5 billion. That is more than fourteen times the $787 million it made in the same quarter a year earlier, and up from $4.73 billion in the first quarter of this year. The company also says it recorded positive adjusted operating income for the first time. Three caveats matter. The numbers are preliminary and were shared with investors rather than audited and filed. 'Adjusted' operating income leaves some costs out. And the company has previously warned that it may not stay profitable across the full year, because data-centre spending ramps up later in 2026. Anthropic is preparing a possible autumn listing with Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase.

Why it mattersTwo days ago the case for Anthropic's valuation rested on a revenue figure from 2028. This is the near-term version of the same argument, and it is the first time a frontier AI lab has claimed that the business of selling access to a model can cover what it costs to run at this scale. That claim is what the listing will be priced against — which is exactly why it deserves the caveats. Preliminary, adjusted, company-supplied numbers are the ones most worth reading twice.
