The place where open models live has hired a bank. The asking price is $13 billion.

Business Insider reported on Sunday 23 August that Hugging Face has engaged a bank to sound out buyers at a valuation of 13 billion dollars or more. The report cites people familiar with the matter, says talks are early and names no bidder. Hugging Face last took outside money three years ago — a 235 million dollar round in August 2023 at a 4.5 billion dollar valuation, led by Salesforce Ventures with Nvidia, Google, Amazon, Intel, Qualcomm, IBM, Sequoia and Lux also in. Founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf, the company runs the Hub, which hosts more than 3 million public models and over a million datasets, and earns money from paid subscriptions, enterprise hosting and compute. It has never disclosed revenue. In November 2025 Delangue said publicly that the industry was in an "LLM bubble" that "might burst in 2026" and that his company was sitting on roughly 200 million dollars it had not spent. Four days before this report, Stripe closed its 7.5 billion dollar purchase of the model router OpenRouter.

Why it mattersHugging Face is not a model company. It is the neutral ground where everyone else's weights are hosted, downloaded and compared — the closest thing open AI has to shared infrastructure. Who owns that matters in a way that a model acquisition does not, because the value of a neutral hub is precisely that it is not aligned with any lab, and a strategic buyer would be. Watch the buyer, not the price. The other reading is about where the market thinks the money is: 13 billion for a place that hosts other people's models, days after 7.5 billion for a service that chooses between them. Distribution is being repriced faster than the models themselves. And note that this is a report, not a deal — early sale talks fail routinely, and Hugging Face has not confirmed anything.
