Google's Africa lab gives you Gemini, Gemma and Veo before the market gets them — applications close on Monday

The Google Africa Applied AI Lab, based at the Accra AI Community Centre in Ghana, closes applications on 31 August. It is open to founders working full-time on a company, and to researchers who intend to become founders, anywhere on the continent; all stages are welcome, with a stated preference for pre-seed to Series A. The five areas it is looking for work in are the future of work, knowledge, software development, creativity and entertainment. Selected teams get early access to Google DeepMind models — Gemini, Gemma and Veo — to test commercial uses before general release, technical mentorship from Google Research teams, go-to-market support, and possible funding from the Google AI Futures Fund and partner investors including 4DX Ventures, Norrsken22, Novastar Ventures and Ventures Platform. Notifications begin in September, co-development runs from mid-September to early December, and the cohort ends with an in-person demo day in Accra.

Why it mattersThe useful part here is not the money, which is conditional, but the access. Testing a product against a model before it is generally available is normally something only large partners get, and it is the difference between building on a platform and building on the version of the platform everyone else already has. For teams building for African markets — where the constraints on connectivity, language coverage and payment rails are real design inputs rather than edge cases — being in the room while those models are still being shaped is worth more than a cheque.
