Terence Tao is building maths models no AI company controls.
The mathematician announced SAIR's Open Math Model initiative on 18 September. The non-profit will train open-weight models for checking proofs, hunting references and everyday research work. Trading firm XTX Markets funds it, and mathematicians themselves will set the training targets.
Why it mattersToday's strongest maths models sit inside company products that no researcher can inspect. An open one would let any university check what the machine actually did.
