OpenAI's first hardware product, developed with Jony Ive's LoveFrom studio, is reportedly a battery-powered, hockey-puck-sized, doughnut-shaped smart speaker with camera sensors, dynamic lighting and moving parts meant to 'give it personality', according to The Information — with reports putting the price between $300 and $400 and a launch targeted for 2027. Bloomberg and others corroborated the outline; OpenAI has not commented.
Why it mattersThis is the first concrete picture — shape, price band, date — of the Altman-Ive bet that conversational AI deserves its own device category. It's priced well above an Echo or HomePod mini, and it's the opening move in a planned family of devices OpenAI hopes can eventually loosen the smartphone's grip.
