Barclays will cut 5,000 jobs and named AI as part of the reason.
British bank Barclays said Thursday it will cut about 5,000 jobs, or 5% of staff, by year end. About 60% of the cuts hit support teams, including software developers, as AI makes remaining staff more productive. Around 1,000 roles already went in the first half, and the bank expects over £1.1 billion in savings.
Why it mattersThis is one of the clearest cases of a big employer naming AI as a reason for cutting office jobs. If you work in support or developer roles, expect employers to ask how much AI can take over.
