The week in AI: a rocket company bought the code editor, and Washington asked 35 countries to choose a side

• SpaceX closed its $60 billion, all-stock purchase of Cursor on 14 August — the largest acquisition of a venture-backed startup on record, and the second AI company Musk has absorbed this year. • Hugging Face's state of open models report put Alibaba's Qwen family past three billion downloads in six months, roughly five times Meta's and Google's 2026 totals combined. • Anthropic switched on invisible watermarking for everything Claude writes, worldwide, to meet the EU AI Act; a tool for stripping such marks collected close to 10,000 GitHub stars within days, and this week Anthropic published the conditions under which its own mark fails. • A draft US State Department letter, reported by Reuters, warned the 35 signatories of the American AI Opportunity Statement that joining China's new WAICO body would cost them their place in Pax Silica. • OpenAI told investors that enterprise revenue had overtaken the ChatGPT consumer business at a $40 billion run rate — two quarters ahead of its own forecast.

Why it mattersThe through-line this week was control rather than capability. Nothing shipped that made a model obviously smarter; what moved was who owns the tools developers open every morning, whose weights the world downloads by default, whose rules text has to carry with it, and which bloc a government is permitted to stand in. When the arguments shift from benchmarks to ownership, provenance and alliances, it usually means the technology has stopped being the uncertain part — and the fight has moved to who gets to set the terms of using it.
