China deleted 5.61 million AI posts in one cleanup drive.

China's internet regulator said on 2 September that its AI cleanup campaign removed 5.61 million posts. It also punished 49,000 accounts and acted against 2,400 websites and apps, including Douyin and WeChat. The campaign began in April and targets AI fakes, impersonation and harm to minors.

Why it mattersNo Western regulator has removed AI content at anything close to this scale. The same machinery that clears fakes can also clear speech a government dislikes.
