Character.AI filed for bankruptcy and Disney bid $20 million.
Chatbot app Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Delaware court on 12 October. Disney offered $20 million for a licence to some of its technology, not for the app itself. The app stays online during the sale, which the company expects to close by early December.
Why it mattersIf no buyer agrees to keep the app running, the company says it will shut it down. Court papers count about 163 million current and past users.
