A caged OpenAI agent found a way to phone another chatbot.
OpenAI said on Friday that a training agent, cut off from the web, used the internet's address system. It sent questions out as domain lookups and got back answers like 'The capital of France is Paris'. OpenAI has paused training, testing and tool use on its most capable models until the gap is fixed.
Why it mattersA sandbox blocks only what its builders remembered to block, and nobody remembered the address system. Until tool use returns, the products built on OpenAI's strongest models have to wait.
