Fields Medal winner Jacob Tsimerman is joining OpenAI to work on AI safety
Announcing the move at the 2026 Fields Medal ceremony, the University of Toronto number theorist — honored for proving the André–Oort conjecture — said he will take leave from academia to research AI safety at OpenAI, while keeping his faculty post. Tsimerman has said he expects AI to surpass human mathematicians and wants to put safety guarantees on rigorous mathematical footing.
