A lab lost the 40,000 chips it was going to train on. So it sold the factory to the company that makes them.
Nvidia is paying Poolside $6 billion to license Model Factory — the pipeline Poolside used to build its open-weight Laguna coding models — and is making offers to the 109 engineers who built it. A separate $1 billion investment values what remains of Poolside at $13 billion post-money. Explicitly not an acquisition: the licence is non-exclusive, the three co-founders stay, and the company keeps operating. The background is why it happened at all. A fundraise that did not close cost Poolside a cluster of 40,000 GB300 chips due online in January, and without that hardware it could no longer train at the frontier.
Why it mattersNvidia has just bought the capacity to manufacture models, not a model — and it is putting that capacity behind Nemotron, its own open-weight line, which competes with the labs that buy its chips. Read alongside the Poolside story it is blunter still: a well-funded frontier lab could not secure compute, and the exit was to sell its methods to the one company that never has that problem. When the chip supplier is also the buyer of last resort for everyone it supplies, 'independent lab' starts to mean something narrower.
