The car with no steering wheel and no pedals finally has a date: 3 September, Austin
Tesla posted a promotional image late on Friday 21 August promising "exclusive access" to Cybercabs at an event in Austin, Texas on 3 September, and began emailing invitations over the weekend. The Cybercab is a two-seat vehicle with no steering wheel and no pedals — the first Tesla built that way — and is designed to function only under autonomous software. According to The Information, staff have been told the rollout starts with rides for Tesla employees on public roads, after which the vehicle joins the company's existing Robotaxi service in Austin, which has been carrying passengers in Model Ys for more than a year. Elon Musk has said production would begin before 2027 and that Tesla intends to sell the vehicle to private buyers for under $30,000. Prototypes were shown at the "We, Robot" event in October 2024 on a closed lot, and employees rode in them in July. The launch date lands three weeks after Nevada cleared the way for thousands of driverless taxis in Las Vegas, with a ceiling of 5,000 vehicles for Tesla.
