ByteDance has folded its coding tool and its agent builder into one app, and pointed it at the office

ByteDance launched Doubao Work this week as a standalone app: a workplace agent that takes a job, breaks it into steps, picks its own tools and runs the whole thing — including driving a virtual desktop and a browser on your behalf. It connects to Lark, ByteDance's Slack equivalent. The launch arrives on top of a reorganisation that has been running since late July. The teams behind Trae, ByteDance's coding platform, and Coze, its agent-building tool, have been folded into the Doubao organisation, and Lark has been broken up: its product team moved under Doubao, while its sales, marketing and support arm went to Volcano Engine, ByteDance's cloud business. New users get a 30-day free trial and ByteDance has not said what it will charge afterwards. The target is Tencent's WorkBuddy, which pulled 21 million visits in June and leads China's AI office-tools market; Trae has been a distant second, and Alibaba's Qwen Work is in the same fight.

Why it mattersThis is what the agent race looks like when it stops being about models. Nothing here is a new model — it is three separate products being welded into one place a company already has open all day, which is the distribution move that usually decides these markets. It is also worth reading as a live experiment the rest of us can watch: OpenAI and Anthropic are largely unavailable to Chinese firms, so China's enterprise AI market is being built end to end by Chinese companies, and Doubao Work, WorkBuddy and Qwen Work will settle in public which shape of workplace agent people actually keep using. Note the specific claim to be sceptical of, in this launch and in the Western ones that will copy it: an agent that controls a desktop and a browser unattended is exactly the capability that surveys keep showing companies cannot get to finish a multi-step job reliably. The 30-day trial is where that gets tested.
