A chip startup raised $875m by betting on ordinary memory.
Positron said on Thursday it raised 875 million dollars, valuing the chip startup at five billion. Its design skips the scarce stacked memory Nvidia relies on and uses commodity phone memory. Its first chip reaches the factory at the end of this year, with production set for 2027.
Why it mattersA shortage of that stacked memory is what pushed Chinese AI chip prices up this week. A design that never needed the scarce part could walk around the squeeze.
