China's answer to Nvidia just got up to 50% more expensive.

Huawei and Cambricon raised AI chip prices by 20% to 50% in two months, Reuters reported Thursday. The cause is a global shortage of high-bandwidth memory, the stacked chips that feed data to accelerators. Huawei's Ascend 950PR now sells above 80,000 yuan, up from about 60,000 in January.

Why it mattersBeijing's plan to replace Nvidia at home depends on chips that keep getting pricier. Export controls meant to slow China are now raising the cost of its own alternative.
