Justice Department asks why Nvidia licensed Groq instead of buying it.
Bloomberg reported on Thursday that antitrust enforcers sent Nvidia a formal demand for information. Nvidia paid about $20 billion for a non-exclusive licence and hired Groq's founder, but bought nothing. Buying the firm would have triggered merger review, while a licence and a hiring spree trigger none.
Why it mattersNvidia used the same structure weeks earlier to absorb the model lab Poolside. If it holds, large firms can take rivals apart without ever filing for review.
