AI agents checked the longest proof in mathematics in 24 days.

AI agents checked the longest proof in mathematics in 24 days.

The startup Axiom Math released a computer-checked proof of the classification of finite simple groups on Monday. Dozens of AI agents wrote about 43 million lines of code in Lean, a language that checks proofs. The work exposed 34 notable gaps in the published proof, and Axiom wants experts to recheck its result.

Why it mattersThe original proof fills about 15,000 pages by roughly 100 mathematicians, far too much for one person to recheck. Machines can now audit such giant results in weeks, which changes how mathematicians can trust them.
