A Chinese map app built a 3D world you can fly through.
Amap, Alibaba's mapping arm, released a model on Thursday that generates whole three-dimensional cities. It builds the scene in one pass, from planet view down to a single street corner. The company says it covers over 196 countries and regions, and it already powers its street view.
Why it mattersRobots and self-driving cars need somewhere cheap to practise before touching a real road. A map company sitting on years of street imagery is well placed to sell that.
