An AI agent tuned a real quantum chip at MIT by itself.

OpenAI published a case study this week with a graduate student in MIT's quantum systems group. Her agent chose the settings, drove the lab instruments and calibrated six qubits without her. It stumbled on noisy signals, and she still had to judge the ambiguous readings herself.

Why it mattersMuch of experimental physics is slow repetitive tuning, exactly the work these agents can absorb. The limits matter as much, because the agent needed a person whenever the data got messy.
