A tiny open Chinese model matched one four times its size.
The Chinese lab OpenBMB released MiniCPM5-2B on Monday, a free model small enough for a phone. Independent tester Artificial Analysis scored it level with a rival holding four times as many parameters. It now leads every open model under four billion parameters on that index.
Why it mattersCapable AI is moving onto the device in your pocket, where it runs without sending data away. Small free models also cut the cost for anyone building tools on top of them.
