Rumour: DeepSeek's next flagship is said to arrive in September, rebuilt from scratch — and the company has never once used the name
This is an unverified rumour and we are publishing it as one. Circulating on X and across model-watching sites is the claim that DeepSeek will ship a new flagship in September: not an upgrade of V4 but a model built on a fresh foundation, said to reach the level of the frontier labs while staying far cheaper to run. Nothing here is confirmed. DeepSeek has never used the name V5, has announced no date, and has published no model card or benchmark. Trackers reviewing first-party sources through mid-August found nothing, and several analysts think the likelier next step is a stabilised update to V4 rather than a new generation at all. One thing is verified and worth carrying with you: fabricated V5 benchmark tables are already circulating, so any leaked scoreboard you meet in the coming weeks should be assumed false until DeepSeek itself publishes one.
Why it mattersDeepSeek matters to the rest of us mainly through price. Its previous releases forced competitors to cut what they charge and gave people running models on their own hardware something near the frontier for nothing, so the mere expectation of a new one changes what labs announce and when. That is also precisely why this rumour is worth treating carefully rather than dismissing: anticipation this strong is the ideal cover for invented benchmark screenshots, and this one already has them. We will report a launch when DeepSeek announces it, and we will say so here if September passes without one.
