Google's power deal will keep a Finnish nuclear plant open past 2030.

Google's power deal will keep a Finnish nuclear plant open past 2030.

Google said on Wednesday it will spend 13 billion euros on four data centre sites in Finland. It also bought half the output of the Loviisa nuclear plant from 2030 to 2049. Fortum, the plant's owner, says it could not have run past 2030 without that money.

Why it mattersThe electricity behind AI is now booked decades ahead, on the same grid that heats your home. This deal cuts the other way too, since a data centre is now paying to keep a reactor alive.
