WIRED reported on Friday that OpenAI asked lawmakers whether a joint industry slowdown breaks antitrust law. Chief executive Sam Altman told staff this week he would slow down if rival labs did too. Its chief scientist publicly called for that coordination on 6 September, and no answer has come.
Why it mattersThe law that stops companies colluding was never written for firms that want to build more slowly. If Congress says no, every lab keeps racing even when its own scientists want to brake.
